Where Art Meets Luxury: Gstaad This Autumn

For four days this October, the Saanenland opens its workshops, kitchens and ateliers to the world. Here is why it’s the moment to come, and the chalets that make it unforgettable.

For four days this October, the Saanenland opens its workshops, kitchens and ateliers to the world. Here is why it’s the moment to come, and the chalets that make it unforgettable.

There is a particular hour in Gstaad in late October. The summer crowds have gone, the ski season is still a rumour on the peaks, and the larches on the slopes above the village turn to burnished gold. The air is clear enough to taste. It is the hour when the valley belongs, briefly, to the people who make it.

This year, that hour has a stage. From 22 to 25 October 2026, the Gstaader Messe returns for its 44th edition: the largest showcase of the Saanenland, and the one weekend when everything this valley crafts, cooks, builds and dreams is gathered under one roof. For the visitor who loves beautiful things, it is a rare invitation to see where Gstaad’s legendary sense of quality actually comes from.

Where art meets craft

The Gstaader Messe is not a gallery fair, and that is precisely its charm. Held every two years, it is the valley’s own showcase: around 70 exhibitors, from master carpenters and interior makers to cheesemakers, chefs and the artisans whose work fills the finest chalets in the Alps.

In Gstaad, the line between art and craft has always been beautifully blurred. The hand-carved balconies, the timber that has weathered for two centuries, the linen, the leather, the wrought iron: these are the quiet arts that give the village its soul. At the Messe, you meet the people behind them, and you see the work up close.

What makes 2026 special:

  • A farewell edition. This is the final Messe to be held in the tennis hall and festival tent at the Sportzentrum Gstaad, making the 44th edition a moment of real local history.

  • The next generation. The fair’s traditional apprentice competition puts the valley’s young craftspeople in the spotlight, a living lesson in how Swiss excellence is passed down.

  • A table worth travelling for. Regional gastronomy runs through the whole weekend, from Saanen cheese to local wines and mountain specialities.

  • Free to all. Entry is free, and the mood is warm, unhurried and authentically Saanenland.

Who you’ll meet, and the art beyond the fair

The joy of the Messe is its people. Expect familiar faces from across the Saanenland: builders, designers, farmers, hoteliers and makers, all happy to stop, talk and linger. It is the kind of place where a conversation over a glass of local wine can end with a commission for a hand-carved table.

For collectors, Gstaad’s art credentials extend far beyond the fair. The village is home to outposts of two of the world’s leading galleries, Hauser & Wirth and Gagosian, and each winter it hosts MAZE Art Gstaad, which in February 2026 brought works by artists including Anish Kapoor, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Ed Ruscha to the mountains. An October visit lets you pair the valley’s living crafts with its world-class galleries, without the winter crowds.

Gstaad: the quiet luxury of the Saanenland

Gstaad has never needed to shout. Tucked into the Bernese Oberland, the village has kept its scale, its timber-chalet architecture and its car-free Promenade, lined with boutiques and cafés, while the wider world fell in love with it.

The Saanenland around it is a patchwork of farming hamlets, alpine pastures and peaks, where tradition is not a performance but daily life. In autumn it is at its most beautiful: golden forests, crisp blue days, empty walking trails and the first snow dusting the summits.

The Messe itself takes place at the Sportzentrum Gstaad, a short stroll from the heart of the village. This year is its last in the tennis hall and festival tent, so visitors will share in a genuine farewell to a much-loved local tradition.

Where to stay: the chalets of Gstaad

To experience the Saanenland as it is meant to be lived, stay in a chalet. And there is no better moment than late October. Between the summer season and the winter rush, the most spectacular chalets in the valley are waiting, with the space, privacy and choice that are impossible to find once the snow arrives.

Gstaad Chalets offers a curated collection of the region’s most magical chalets: centuries-old timber facing out over the peaks, fireplaces glowing through the evening, private wellness spaces and views that stop you mid-sentence.

  • For groups of friends. Spacious chalets with room for everyone, so the weekend becomes a shared adventure: the Messe by day, long dinners by the fire at night.

  • For families. Generous layouts, open gardens and a valley full of autumn walks.

  • For the whole family, four-legged members included. Pet-friendly chalets mean nobody gets left at home.

  • For collectors and creatives. Chalets furnished with the very craftsmanship you’ll discover at the fair, a fitting base for a weekend devoted to beautiful things.

Because it is the quieter season, you have the pick of the valley’s finest homes. Explore the collection.
